That spy satellite that was of such concern to the government these past several weeks is now falling to Earth in pieces. I hope you all have your Kevlar umbrellas and catcher’s mitts ready.
Satellite Hit May Boost Missile Defense
By YOCHI J. DREAZEN and ANDY PASZTOR
February 22, 2008; Page A2The successful use of a Navy missile to destroy a dying U.S. spy satellite late Wednesday night is a boon for missile-defense advocates and could boost the flagging political support for the costly effort to design a system capable of shooting down ballistic missiles launched by rogue nations such as North Korea.
The strike marked the first time that a U.S. missile designed to defend against incoming enemy warheads was instead used to bring down a satellite. It was a significant technical achievement for the U.S., which hasn’t carried out a similar high-altitude strike against a space-based target since the Cold War.
A missile, soaring 130 miles above the Pacific Ocean, smashed the satellite and appears to have destroyed a tank carrying 1,000 pounds of potentially lethal rocket fuel, the stated objective of the effort, which cost more than $60 million.
So, the U.S. has flexed its military muscle now, and people are thankful that we now have some type of planetary defenses. Here is a video that shows what happened in detail.
Catch you on the backside!
