Thanks to James Tiberias Kirk and company, we now have pneumatic hypo units, handheld electronic medical devices, flip phones with cameras in them, Internet video communications and Bluetooth communication devices that just stick into the ear. Uhura, played by the beautiful and very sweet actress Nichelle Nichols, would have had to smile at that one.
Now, scientists are researching proton shielding, such as what Scotty, played by Canadian actor James Doohan, would activate as a defensive measure when the Romulans or Klingons attacked. Why are they researching it? They suggest that it might protect astronauts stationed on Mars during long Martian missions.
‘Bubble’ Could Protect Mars Astronauts From Radiation
Nov. 4, 2008 — Scientists believe they have found a way of protecting astronauts from a dangerous source of space radiation, thus lifting a major doubt clouding the dream to send humans to Mars.
Their breakthrough takes forward ideas born in the golden age of science fiction, including a proton shield used in the TV show “Star Trek,” says one of the researchers.
Space weather is one of the greatest challenges facing Mission Red Planet sketched by the United States and Europe for some three decades from now.
Having even a small proton shield around working astronauts could prevent a very deadly Kobayashi Maru moment, unless the astronauts happen to settle in the area of Cydonia. Will they have to use phaser rifles next? I certainly hope not.
Beam me up, Scotty!
Catch you on the Backside!
