Most become quickly exasperated with disaster planning because of the time, money and effort it requires. Consequently, they wait for talking head TV “experts” to tell them what to do.

In 2010, audiences were gripped by post apocalyptic world portrayed in The Book of Eli. The film paints a near future Earth, replete with barren muddy browns, wounded skies and where everything is about as bad as it can be for man and beast.

In the center of this story is the character Eli, played by Denzel Washington. A deadly but intense and mythical spiritual warrior, who carries the entire Bible in his head to an eventual place of safety. He also kills a lot of bad guys getting there.

However, the crucial question raised by this popular film is, can we survival a post apocalyptic world with our humanity and spirituality intact? If so, is a such a possibility nothing more than an entertaining fiction?

According to William von Holst, editor of The Warrior Code by Imre Vallyon and Matthew Stein, author of When Technology Fails, being a spiritual warrior is your surest path to your own survival and those whom you care about. However, as of this publication date, no credible evidence has been presented to back these inferences that Comet Elenin has in fact, disintegrated. Rather, what is now being reported, is that Comet Elenin has dimmed and that some astronomers are predicting it will not survive perihelion. Elenin’s closest distance to the Sun which occurs on or about September 11, 2011.

Despite premature debunker spin, that reliable sources are not reporting any observation of an actual disintegration of Comet Elenin. Rather, they report dimming and that Elenin could disintegrate in the near future.

Nonetheless, trickily worded headlines spin the notion that Comet Elenin has in fact disintegrated. Ostensibly, to quash pubic concerns about this comet.

Whether these misleading headlines are based in expedient hubris or malevolence intention makes no difference. Either way, the confusion will stymie the interest of many, at a time when they should be reviewing their own preparation and planning efforts.  GO

Last May, FEMA conducted the National Level Exercise 2011. The largest such exercise to date and the goal was to test preparedness for a major earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ). In this advisory, Dr. Brian Dolehide, a Chicago area FEMA volunteer will share survival insights on how to prepare for a New Madrid event.

For a view of broader natural threats, Dr. Mark Sircus, a physician in Brazil, will discuss global seismicity and volcanism trends, both of which are on the rise. Together, they offer listeners a broad view of the threats facing them. They warn that if you live in the New Madrid zone a toxic cataclysm may be coming your way.

This is because the Mississippi and Missouri rivers are rising again and we need to be mindful of the connection between water and quakes, because dams are known to cause Earthquakes. Scientists have identified over 100 earthquakes they believe were triggered by reservoirs.  The most serious was the Sichuan earthquake in May 2008, which killed some 80,000 people.  This A 7.9-magnitude event was linked to the construction of the Zipingpu Dam.

Already sandbagged against the rising Missouri and downstream of already strained dams and levies, the Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant in Nebraska recently had a fire. Although the plant is in cold shut down mode, many worry about its spent fuel pool. Similar to the Fukushima plant in Japan, a New Madrid quake with subsequent flooding from dam and levy failures could unleash a toxic nightmare. GO
